Himeji Castle is affectionately known as “Shirasagi-jō” (White Egret Castle) for its elegant appearance, said to resemble a white egret spreading its wings. It is distinguished by its white plastered walls and its complex keep structure, in which the main keep—five stories above ground with six floors and one basement level—is connected by corridors to three smaller keeps on the east, west, and northwest sides.

  • POINT

The great keep of Himeji Castle that we see today was built in 1609. More than 400 years later, it still retains its beautiful appearance.
